According to Councillor Tony Page, lead member for Strategic Environment, Planning and Transport, Reading Borough Council is looking for a traveller transit site and will reveal plans 'fairly soon'.
As many of us will know, Reading West has faced numerous unauthorised encampments over recent years and residents from across the constituency have suffered varying levels of distress, anti-social behaviour and intimidation. Our MP, Alok Sharma has campaigned for a number of years, with constituent's support, for a strengthening of the law to tackle illegal encampments.
Thankfully, legislation to deal with this matter is now making its way through Parliament. Amongst other vital provisions, the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill will ensure that going forward, the police are fully equipped with the powers they need to tackle illegal encampments more effectively. Like Alok, we very much hope that once this new Bill becomes law, we will see fewer illegal encampments in Reading West and we are grateful to all Reading West constituents who have supported Alok's campaign for a change in the law.
